Men’s Sheds are about men’s health—plain and simple. While physical health factors like fitness, nutrition, and medical care often get the spotlight, there’s far less public conversation about the mental and social well-being that is just as critical to men’s overall health.
That’s where Men’s Sheds come in.
Sheds provide social connection, a sense of purpose, and opportunities to contribute—offering men “something to do, somewhere to go, and someone to talk to.” This is often referred to as “health by stealth”—the idea that health benefits emerge naturally through participation, without it feeling like a health program.
The evidence backs it up. Research from around the world—and right here in Alberta—shows that Men’s Sheds improve health outcomes for participants. A 2023 study by the University of Alberta found that Shed involvement provided camaraderie, inclusion, and renewed purpose, leading to noticeable improvements in both mental and physical health.
An internet search will take you to many reports about the impact of a Men’s Shed on its participants. These are just a few of our favourites:

The Shed Effect: Stories From Shedders in Scotland
“Visiting a men’s shed in full flow, listening to shedders’ speaking about their shed, and hearing about its place in their lives, you can’t fail to recognize the positive impact that sheds are having. There’s a “buzz” and a “vibe” about a shed, and you can see, and hear, that people feel good being there. The craic, banter, leg-pulling, laughter, camaraderie, and storytelling are all very much in evidence.”
